Magazine Subscriptions for Free!

I enjoy reading magazines. I love collecting recipes from them and occasionally trying the neat craft ideas some of them hold. For the sake of being frugal, over the past few years, I have given up my magazine subscriptions. They were just not "needed".  You can only imagine how happy I was when I discovered ways of earning magazines online for free! This year I have received three free subscriptions to magazines that I enjoy.

My first subscription was for "Taste of Home Simple and Delicious". I received this subscription as a reward from OpinionSquare survey site. (If anyone wants to join this site, just let me know!)

After that subscription started I received a subscription to "Martha Stewart-Living" from RewardsGold

The last magazine I was rewarded with was "Woman's Day". I received this magazine when I traded my points in at RecycleBank

So that is three magazines, I enjoy reading, that I have received without having to spend any of my hard earned ca$h!  Being frugal is sometimes difficult but there are ways around the obstacles if you just know where to look!

Are their any magazine subscriptions that you would like to earn?

Lil Keith is Finally Home!

Lil Keith was gone for an entire week! I was shocked that he would stay away that long. He finally come home yesterday. We were so happy to have him back!

He had fun at Grandma's house. He got to visit both of his Aunt's and spend the night. He went to his cousin Julie's birthday party & had a blast. I think the most fun he had was going swimming though. He enjoys the water!

We are so glad to have him back!

Our Weekend

We have had a very fun weekend. On Saturday, Keith got up bright and early and took the truck for a tune-up & oil change. When he got back we packed up our little cooler and the twins and went to Dr. Young's Pond Berry Farm located in Angier, NC. There were not too many blackberries left but we did get some blueberries. I tried to stay at the end of the field where the shade was because I had the twins in the stroller. It was a balmy 88 degrees outside. We really enjoyed it. I hope Keith is going to go back on Tuesday and pick us some more berries. (I would love for Keith & I to go back by ourselves and pick at least one ice cream bucket full each!)
After picking the berries we stopped at a small butcher shop and picked up a few meat bundles and headed home to put away our goodies.

Once we got home, got the kiddo's changed, cooled down and fed we began processing the berries. We have two quarts of blackberries and five quarts of blueberries. After finishing up the berries we repackaged the meat & put it in the freezer as well. Then it was quick showers and rounding everyone up again to go make a trip to Walmart and Save-A-Lot.

On the way we stopped at a local consignment shop to browse around. Ended up getting Lil Keith some much needed shorts and tshirts. On to Walmart we went. Mostly just a few staples were bought there. I needed some canning jars and some Sure-Jell for making strawberry jam (out of the strawberries I picked this season). Walmart also had a clearance on some of their children's clothing.  We picked up polo shirts for the twins for $1 and an outfit each for $2. Couldn't leave Lil Keith out of the fray so we also got him a tshirt off of the clearance rack as well. After this was done it was off to Save-A-Lot to pick up more items off of my grocery list and then home to put it all away. A very busy Saturday!

Sunday we relaxed a bit more and Sunday evening my friend Kim and her family stopped by for a visit. It was a nice way to end the weekend. I hope everyone else had a fun weekend!

A Life's Lesson In Patience

I was sent this in a email. I have seen it on FaceBook and on other blogs as well. It has been spreading around the internet for a bit now. I wonder if this story is true? It had a very real effect on me. Sometimes we need to slow down and think about what we are saying and doing & how it is effecting others.

A NYC Taxi driver wrote:

I arrived at the address and honked the horn. After waiting a few minutes I honked again. Since this was going to be my last ride of my shift I thought about just driving away, but instead I put the car in park and walked up to the door and knocked.. ‘Just a minute’, answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor.
After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 90′s stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940′s movie.
By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets.
There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard
box filled with photos and glassware.
‘Would you carry my bag out to the car?’ she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman.
She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb.
She kept thanking me for my kindness. ‘It’s nothing’, I told her.. ‘I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother to be treated.’
‘Oh, you’re such a good boy, she said. When we got in the cab, she gave me an address and then asked, ‘Could you drive
through downtown?’
‘It’s not the shortest way,’ I answered quickly..
‘Oh, I don’t mind,’ she said. ‘I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice.
I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening. ‘I don’t have any family left,’ she continued in a soft voice..’The doctor says I don’t have very long.’ I quietly reached over and shut off the meter.
‘What route would you like me to take?’ I asked.
For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator.
We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she’d ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, ‘I’m tired.Let’s go now’.
We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico.
Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move.
They must have been expecting her.
I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair.
‘How much do I owe you?’ She asked, reaching into her purse.
‘Nothing,’ I said
‘You have to make a living,’ she answered.
‘There are other passengers,’ I responded.
Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug.She held onto me tightly.
‘You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,’ she said. ‘Thank you.’
I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light.. Behind me, a door shut.It was the sound of the closing of a life..
I didn’t pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly lost in thought. For the rest of that day,I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver,or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away?
On a quick review, I don’t think that I have done anything more important in my life.
We’re conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments.
But great moments often catch us unaware-beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.

I Miss My Lil Man!

Grandma come to get Lil Keith today so that he could go to his cousin's birthday party. They left this afternoon at around 3:30 and I have been missing him since he got in the car and I watched them pull out of the driveway. He is my little sweetie. I think sometimes I might get too impatient with him (like when I am changing the twins and I come back into the living room and he has Thomas the Train up on top of the coffee table and is about to ride off .... I have several grey hairs from that incident! ) but he has me wrapped right around his little finger.

He left all of his cars and trucks lined up on that same coffee table this afternoon and I am going to leave them in exactly the same place til he gets home. The twins miss him too. Normally he keeps them very entertained. It is almost as if he is showing them what they need to do when they get older.  I am glad he is going to visit with family and have fun but I certainly will be glad when he comes home.
